Just finished reading Susan Cain’s book, Quiet.  The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking. I’d recommend it.  It gives us insight and pause about the importance of the introvert in our society.  Her premise, we’ve become a world that values the extravert and are missing the important contributions of those who are introverts…are quiet.

Susan cites famous individuals who were shy, quiet, yet have made such a huge contritbution to our society.  Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln, Steve Wosniak and more.

The world has gotten incredibly noisy. My own personal observation is that people are doing more and more outlandish things, just to get noticed!  They make outrageous statements, create videos and produce films that are increasingly offensive just in an effort to get attention and be heard!

I agree with Susan…let’s be sure to nurture our children to read, to have time my mom used to call “hum time”, and show them that we don’t have to be the noisiest, the most outrageous or the most energetic in the room.  It’s ok to be just who they are.  And to find out just who one is, one does need some quiet.
